5 Myths about the relaxed life of mariners
White Uniform, sailing on very far-off land, having every luxury in it, having
the best life as a Navy Trader officer is something that is believed by someone
on land. People were tempted by the wages of these sailors, which were offered
to the officers, and also the floating iron palace. But the reality is far
beyond what is seen!
Here are some myths that are believed for those
who are in the Merchant Navy:
1. Money and money and
money
The best thing and the very
first thing that comes to everyone's mind is money. Commoners are intrigued by
the kind of salary ranges offered to naval officers. There is no doubt that the
officers are the big, paid private sector workers, very similar to those who
earn, as decent as someone accesses respectable high-end jobs in the field.
While this is correct, the pay scale is much better than many of the jobs we
would get on the shore, but the high price requires greater sacrifice! The pain
of seafarers is invisible and witness less and is always discreet. Officers
aboard the ship spend time away from their families, living in unpredictable
weather conditions, hard work every day and beyond working hours on board 24×7
and many more.
2. Drink and Work
and Drink
The world believes that most of the sailors can swallow gallons of alcohol, meaning, they can drink and drink and have the best of the time in their voyage. But what a commoner misses the most is the random alcohol tests onboard which is as equivalent as any surprise test at school. The alcohol is NOT FREE ONBOARD, so in case, someone would like to drink, they will certainly have to pay in dollars to please their thirst. Though, alcohol is certainly affordably cheap onboard, but this doesn’t give us the liberty to drink like a fish or even like a whale.
3. Mariners are Womanizer
This is another myth that has been believed by many people. Going back in history, there was an era where mariners were welcomed by the number of women at the port but that was decades ago. However, over time, with the emergence of safety regulations, the ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code, and other security measures, this has become a historical past. No doubt, we really have fictional ideas for sailors, who get off at the port and do what they want (according to our assumptions). Although these sailors have anchored at various ports and explored mythical culture, they have not forgotten the bonds of relationship and love. Means, seamen value and understand the true meaning of relationships and family.
4. Never get a Seasick
The most common question asked
by any merchant navy officer is, “Aren't you getting sick?” Navigators are
people and both motion sickness, seasickness affects people and various ways
and certainly this is no big deal. People get on board and gradually get used
to the symptoms. Certainly not everyone faces these challenges, but there are
experiences in which sailors have experienced even the worst, but in the end
they got nervous about their lifestyle.
5. Pirate-proof facilities
No, not all pirates are like Captain
Phillips or Pirates of the Caribbean. They are far beyond our imaginations and
expectations. And another great myth is that seafarers risk their lives on
every trip. There was a series of news about the pirates hijacking the ships
and demanding money from the government. But that doesn't mean that seafarers
deal with pirates every day and everywhere. So there are risks, and they are
life-threatening, but the seafarers take the risk. And they're not
pirate-proof!
